Simunic Fired as Manager of Redhawks, Schlact to Take Over

On Sunday the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks announced that they have relieved manager Doug Simunic of his duties as the Manager of the team after 22 years in the dugout for the Redhawks.

The Redhawks will start a search for a new manger at the conclusion of this current season. The man taking over the managerial duties on the interim basis is pitching coach Michael Schlact. Schlact has been with the organization for the past three seasons as the pitching coach and now will be taking on both duties.

Schlact did not get into specifics about the firing just that “The owners (Bruce and Brad Thom) told me this morning, I don’t know in relation to when they told (Doug) but when I got there they told me come to the office and they informed me then”. Schlact had not yet had a chance to talk to Simunic, as the Redhawks had a game tonight.

When it comes to the future of the managerial position, Schlact is unsure on that. “right now I’m the interim manager” said Schlact, who has been the acting pitching coach the last three seasons, “Right now I’m focused on helping this team right now I’m focused on these last 20 plus games and putting them in the best position to make a run at the playoffs”. The Redhawks were just 4 games out of first in the north entering Sunday.

When asked if being a manger was something he would consider if he was offered the job Schlact said he loves baseball, the team and the town but it’s something he would have to discuss with his family as well. “There’s a lot of factors that need to play out and my family needs to be involved in that” Said Schlact.

Schalct will now be the interim manager on the field and the pitching coach. “I’ll still work with the pitchers and do the pitching stuff since that is what I did in my career and what I’ve done here” Said Schlact, “We’ll finish out the season that way.

Simunic was the only manager in team history and leaves with a career record of 1202-839 along with 5 league championships. He gave Schlact his first opportunity at a professional coaching career “he hired me gave me a chance to get into the game as a coach and I was blessed enough to sit by him in the dugout”.
