Senior Dexter Werner put up 19 points in just 20 minutes as NDSU earned their third straight win with a 81-71 win over Oral Roberts. Werner was held scoreless and played just two minutes in the first half because of early foul trouble. The fouls might have been what some would call ticky-tack fouls against ORU big an Albert Owens. When asked about his frustration with the first half foul trouble the response was simple from the all summit league senior “very”.
Werner would play 18 of 20 minutes in the second half with 19 points and only pick up one foul. “I wish he would have been able to stay out of foul trouble” said head coach Dave Richman “that’s a big part of Dexter’s game is being fresh and having his legs”.
NDSU started out hot from the field making six of their first eight three point shots and lead early in the game. However, the offense hit a lull and didn’t make a field goal in the last 4:53 which allowed ORU to have a 15-0 run and a 41-32 lead at the break.
“I thought we got out toughed (in the first half)” said Richman about his team’s first half performance. “I really challenged our guys in some of those senses”
Werner’s 19 along with a 10-point half from Tyson Ward propelled the Bison in the second half. NDSU got the offense going midway through the second frame when they hit five of six shots including a Ward three pointer to grab a 64-62 lead with just over five minutes remaining. The Bison would finish the game on a 17-9 run to capture the 10 point win.
With the win NDSU now has a 16-5 record and 8-1 with a two game led in Summit League play. This game finishes a stretch of three games in seven days. NDSU will get a six day break before returning to the road for a matchup with IUPUI before a three-game homestand.
