Bison Soccer Upsets #1 Seed SDSU to Advance to Summit League Championship

North Dakota State's (NDSU) Women's soccer team took on the #1 seed South Dakota State (SDSU) Jackrabbits in the first round of the Summit League Tournament, Thursday afternoon, and pulled off the upset win 2-0.

SDSU came into the match with an undefeated record in league play including a 4-0 win over the Bison four days prior. NDSU played heavy defensively and capitalized on their chances to upset the top-seeded Jack Rabbits

North Dakota State jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 27th-minute after Mallory Fenske placed a cross into the penalty box directly onto the head of Malley O'Brien, who headed the ball into the back of the net. The goal was O'Brien's team-high seventh goal of the season and Fenske's first assist.

NDSU increased its lead to 2-0 in the 70th-minute with a goal from junior Britney Monteon. Monteon got on the end of a cross from freshman Maddie Burnstein and found space in teh back corner of the net to all but seal the win for the Bison.It was Monteon's second goal of the season and the first point and assist of Burnstein's college career.

Monica Polgar (8-5-0) picked up the shutout in net for the Bison with four saves. the shutout was Polgar's fifth of the season.

The Jack rabbits had the lions share of the possession the entire match but weren't able to break through a tough and experienced Bison back line. For the match, South Dakota State outshot the Bison, 17-5, and posted a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.

With the win NDSU moves on to the championship match Saturday at 12:00 pm at Dacotah Field agaisnt the #2 seed Denver Pioneers who beat Oral Roberts earlier in the day 1-0.
