Burros Hold on and Take 1A Title

Grant Skager put Hillsboro-Central Valley on his back and lead the Burros to their first 1A state championship with a 16-14 win over the Cardinals of Langdon-Edmore-Munich.

Skager carried the ball 42 times in the game totaling 188 yards and one of the two touchdowns for the Burros.  After fumbling on their first play from scrimmage the Burros defense got the ball back and started the scoring when Skager got a 6-yard run into the endzone to put the Burros up in the first quarter.

The Cardinals did answer with their first score just seven seconds into the second quarter as quarterback Jacob Delvo found Chase Peebles for a 39-yard touchdown pass. After that score the Cardinals were held off the scoreboard until late in the contest because of a stiff Burros defense. Hillsboro turned the Cardinals over three times and also came up with a key goaline stand early in the fourth quarter and got and Oscar Benson interception with just 4 minutes left to preserve a 16-6 lead.

The Cardinals did get the ball back and Delvo found Anfernee Economy in the endzone for a 10-yard pass and the 2-point conversion made it a two-point game (14-16) with just over a minute to play. However, the onside kick was recovered by the Burros and Hillsboro was able to run out the clock and earn their first state title at the 1A level.

The Cardinals took some solace in the season awards with their coach Josh Krivarchka taking home coach of the year honors, while Clayton Grueneich of Ellendale-Edgeley-Kulm was named senior athlete of the year.
