Rushing Attack Leads Warbirds to 9-man State Title

The North Dakota 9-man state championship featured a cross-state matchup as the Wyndmere-Lidgerwood Warbirds of region 1 took on the region 5 champs the Shiloh Christian Skyhawks

The ground game for Wyndmere-Lidgerwood was too much for Shiloh Christian as the Warbirds won their second state title with a 60-26 victory. Wyndmere-Lidgerwood racked up 325 yards and six touchdowns on the ground on just 31 carries averaging more than 10 yards per rush. Luke Foertsch had a career day starting the scoring with a 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown then leading the Warbird rushing attack with 168 yards and four scores on the ground. Foertsch also added one reception for a nine-yard score. His six total touchdowns tied a Dakota Bowl record.

It was a six-point game at halftime with Wyndmere in front 26-20 but the Warbirds outscored the Skyhawks in the second half 34-6.  Shiloh was held off the scoreboard in the third quarter and Wyndmere-Lidgerwood added a score when quarterback Wyatt Harles threw a nine-yard pass to Foertsch for a score. Touchdown runs of 21, 31 and 46 yards for the Warbirds in the fourth quarter put it out of reach and they would close out their first state championship since 2010.

Wyndmere-Lidgerwood also swept the season awards with senior Charlie Moffet taking home senior athlete of the year and head coach Scott Strenge was named the coach of the year in 9-man football.
