Saints Avenge Regular Season Defeat With Dakota Bowl Win Over Deacons

Bismarck St. Mary’s got revenge for an earlier loss to the Shanley Deacons in the regular season with a win in the 2A state championship game by a final of 31-12.

The game was a defensive struggle early with neither breaking through in the first quarter and a half. It wasn’t until about four minutes left in the first half that the Saints got some momentum with a few big passes from Cole Gendreau got the offense going and then Gendreau finished it off on the ground with a 5-yard touchdown run. The Saints would add to that lead before the half forcing a quick punt from the Deacons and turning that defense into offense when running back Jonah Krebs bulldozed his way across the goal line from one-yard out as time expired in the first half, giving the Saints a 14-0 lead at the half and all the momentum.

Shanley would get on the scoreboard in the second half with a pass from Cade Busek into the arms of Cam Saville from 24 yards out. That score cut it to a 14-6 lead after a missed extra-point, but it was all Saints after that

Bismarck Saint Mary’s defense forced a turnover on downs and a fumble to take command of the game scoring 17 unanswered points. The Deacons didn’t get back on the scoreboard until the game had already been decided scoring on a 51-yard touchdown pass to Miles Wosick from Kaden Kueneman with 38 seconds remaining.

The Saints used an uncharacteristically balanced attack to win their fourth state title in five years. The Saints ran for 131 yards but threw the ball through the air more than they had for most of the season totaling 167 yards on 22 attempts.

Shanley did have a victory in the season awards as first-year head coach Troy Mattern took home coach of the year.
