Packers Power Past Hi-Liners, Earn EDC Championship

The West Fargo Packers had run through the regular season with only one blemish, a three-set loss in Valley City against the Hi-Liners. The Packers made that mistake wasn’t duplicated in the postseason as they defeated Valley City in three sets to earn the EDC tournament championship, Saturday afternoon at Fargo North High School.

West Fargo got off to a blazing fast start leading 7-1 in the first set. The Hi-Liners would make a run down by five midway through the opening set and cut the Packer lead to one as Sophmore Macy Olstad picked up her fifth kill of the first frame. West Fargo would close it out from there however up 19-18 the packers went on a six-point run to take the first set 25-18.

The second set was a similar start with west Fargo jumping out early but Valley City to the packers punch and delivered one of their own and actually took the lead at 15-13. But the experience and depth of the Packers was too much as senior standouts Kalli Hegerle and Darian Chwialkowski combined on two kills and Freshmen Maddie Waldera added three aces in the set to give West Fargo their second 25-18 win in set two.

The third set was over fairly quick with West Fargo jumping out to a 15-5 lead and never trailing in the final frame as they swept the Hi-Liners with a convincing 25-14 set three win to win the match 3-0.

Hegerle did it all for the Packers once again, the North Dakota State commit tallied a team high 17 kills to go along with 18 assists, 10 digs and three aces. Chwialkowski also added 10 kills and senior Taylor Morris lead the Packers in assists with 27 helpers.

With the win the Packers lock up the top seed from the East for the State tournament. Valley City grabs the 2 seed while Fargo Davies and Devils Lake take the three and four seeds, respectively. The state tournament will be played Thursday November 16th through Saturday the 18th at the Fargodome.
