APPLETON, Wis. — Donald Driver will be ready to go if the Green Bay Packers call and say they needed his help.

Other NFL teams, however, needn't bother.

Green Bay's all-time leading receiver announced his retirement Jan. 31 after 14 years in the NFL — all with the Packers. Driver says he still loves the game, but he promised Packers fans he'd never play for another team.

“At the end of the day, if I get that itch, it would only be for the green and gold,” he said. “If the Packers called me and said, ‘Drive, come back to training camp,’ I'd be back for training camp. But until then, I'll be sitting at home and just watching football.”

He added: “I think the thing for me is if the Packers call midseason, I'd be in shape. I've been staying in shape.”

Driver was back in northeastern Wisconsin over the weekend. On Saturday, a street in downtown Green Bay was renamed “Donald Driver Way” and a statue in his likeness was unveiled. On Sunday, he held his annual charity softball game in Appleton, an event he plans to continue in retirement.

Fargo - A mother of two, Stephanie Cherrstrom has always been active, but a few years ago, she felt she had reached a plateau with her fitness.

“It got to the point that I needed to do something different,” she said.

That’s when she decided to try CrossFit after seeing a flyer at her daughter’s gymnastics studio about four years ago.

“I kind of reached the plateau if you will,” said Cherrstrom, who is from Moorhead and now lives near Tokyo.

Cherrstrom got hooked on CrossFit workouts due to their simplicity.

“It’s a really bare bones type of feel,” said Cherrstrom, who is a CrossFit coach on a U.S. Naval base in Yokosuka, Japan. “We don’t have machines or anything like that. … Loud music, barbells, pull-up bars and that’s about it.”

Cherrstrom, 40, recently placed 21st in the women’s individual division at the Asia Regional. She didn’t qualify for regionals when she was involved with CrossFit in Virginia.

“The caliber of athletes is not quite as high in Asia as it is in the States,” said Cherrstrom, who has been a CrossFit coach for about three years.

Cherrstrom said that

CrossFit is relatively new to Asia. According to the CrossFit website, there are seven affiliated gyms in Japan.

Cherrstrom has enjoyed watching CrossFit grow in Yokosuka, which is about an hour south of Tokyo.

“When I started, there were maybe one or two people who have even heard of CrossFit,” said Cherrstrom, who ranked first in the masters women’s division (ages 40-44) in Asia. “Now I have 70 people that I coach.”

Cherrstrom still has some family ties to the area. Her mother, Teresa Tilock, owns Sammy’s Pizza in downtown Fargo. Cherrstrom also has grandparents who live in Sheldon, N.D.

Tilock said her daughter has taken her fitness to a new level since she started doing CrossFit.

“She found something that she really loved and turned it into a business,” Tilock said. “And I’m very proud of her.”

Cherrstrom has run a marathon and competed in a half ironman (1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bicycle ride and 13.1-mile run) while doing CrossFit. She said in each instance, she didn’t do any additional training beyond her CrossFit workouts to prepare.

“After four years I’d say, it’s not really what I do, it’s kind of who I am,” Cherrstrom said. “It’s kind of become its own separate entity. I have no intentions of stopping.”

MINNEAPOLIS – As an undersized power forward not that far removed from a major injury, Trevor Mbakwe has a lot to prove before establishing an NBA career.

At least one prominent decision-maker doesn’t need to see any more. Flip Saunders has made plenty of first-hand reviews.

“He’s a defender, competitor, shot blocker, rebounder. That’s what he does,” Sanders said. “To play in this league and be effective, you have to have an NBA talent. Nothing that you do average is going to make you that much better in the NBA. It’s trying to take the things that you do well and try to do better at those.”

Mbakwe was in the latest group of prospects brought in by the Minnesota Timberwolves on Monday to run through drills, the ninth of 13 workouts he has scheduled before the draft on June 27. Looking a little slimmer than the 235 pounds he played at last season for the Gophers, Mbakwe flashed his big smile several times as he spoke about how often he’s seen Saunders prior to the session on the Target Center practice court.

Saunders, the new president of basketball operations for the Timberwolves, was a fixture at Williams Arena during the winter while rooting for his alma mater and evaluating potential NBA players. Saunders was there on Feb. 26, perhaps Mbakwe’s best college game, when the Gophers beat top-ranked Indiana.

Mbakwe pushed around Hoosiers 7-footer Cody Zeller that night, a physically dominating performance that Saunders actually reminded Zeller of when he worked out for the Timberwolves last week.

“It was a good game for me to have with all the GMs and the front office people there,” Mbakwe said.

The 24-year-old’s eventful amateur career included stints at three different schools spanning six years, off-the-court trouble and one devastating tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. That happened in November 2011, but the time lost to the surgery and subsequent rehabilitation left him with only one full season on the rebuilt joint.

“I really believe he’s got the talent to play in the league, but he’s had some issues with his knees, and in the NBA ... instead of playing 30 games, now you’re playing 82,” Saunders said. “That’s something you really have to look at.”
