Red Sox trade former Twins 3B Valencia, 2 others

BOSTON — The Red Sox have traded right-handers Zach Stewart and Sandy Rosario and third baseman Danny Valencia.

In a flurry of moves Wednesday, they dealt Stewart to the Pittsburgh Pirates and Rosario to the Oakland Athletics for players to be named and sent Valencia to the Baltimore Orioles for cash considerations.

All three players had been designated for assignment on Nov. 20.

Stewart was 0-2 with a 22.24 ERA in two starts after being obtained from the Chicago White Sox on June 24 for Kev...

BOSTON — Rosy Spraker was only a half-mile from the finish line of her seventh Boston Marathon when the bombs went off. She received her medal later in the mail at her Lorton, Va., home. But she couldn’t bring herself to wear it until Saturday, when she and thousands of other athletes joined victims of the blast to run and walk the last mile of the race.

“Now I feel like I’ve earned my medal,” Spraker said, beaming, after she crossed the Boylston Street finish line, encouraged by a cheering crowd. “I wanted to run for the victims, for freedom, to show the world that nothing is going to stop us.”

“Somebody that thinks that they’re going to stop a marathoner from running doesn’t understand the mentality of a marathoner,” said her husband, Lesley, after he placed the medal around Spraker’s neck.

On April 15, explosions near the finish line killed three people and wounded more than 260.

On Saturday morning, about 3,000 runners and bombing victims gathered in light rain to run the final mile of the world’s oldest annual marathon, said Kathleen McGonagle, spokeswoman for those organizing the event known as OneRun.

OneRun honors victims and emergency workers and allows runners to reclaim the final mile, McGonagle said.

“For the runner that didn’t get the chance to finish the marathon, this is the chance for them to experience the final mile that was taken away from them,” McGonagle said.

For many runners, it was also a chance to heal from the events of that harrowing day.

“It was very emotional to run down this street and see all the people cheering,” said OneRun organizer J. Alain Ferry, who was prevented from completing his ninth consecutive Boston Marathon on April 15 and ran the final mile Saturday.

“There were a lot of tears,” Ferry said, clutching his 2013 marathon bib, with the number 22084. “And I can feel in my throat that there are going to be more. This was a scab for everyone that just was not healing.”

While the event was not a fundraiser, donations from some corporate sponsors covered OneRun operating costs, McGonagle said, and any leftover funds will be sent to a charity set up to benefit bombing victims.

Before the race, the National Anthem was sung by the choir from St. Ann Parish, where 8-year-old victim Martin Richard’s family worshipped.

“It was a beautiful thing,” said an emotional Steve Poirier, of Chelmsford, who had been running his sixth Boston Marathon when he was turned back last month. “As a runner, you want the chance to finish. Better late than never.”

NYC lawsuit alleging Favre sent racy texts settledComments Off

NEW YORK — A lawsuit filed by two massage therapists who sued retired NFL quarterback Brett Favre over claims he sent racy text messages has been settled, a lawyer for the women said Friday.

Lawyer David Jaroslawicz wouldn’t comment on the terms of the settlement, saying only that the case had been “resolved and discontinued.”

Christina Scavo and Shannon O’Toole had alleged in a lawsuit seeking unspecified damages that in 2008, while Favre was playing for the New York Jets, they lost their part-time jobs with the team after complaining that he sent sexually suggestive texts to another therapist.

During the 2008 preseason, the lawsuit alleged, the three-time NFL MVP sent another woman a text message asking to get together with her and Scavo, followed by another text saying, “I guess I have bad intentions.”

After Scavo’s husband asked Favre to apologize, she and O’Toole lost gigs with the Jets, the lawsuit said.

A lawyer for Favre didn’t immediately respond to a call for comment Friday but has denied the allegations in the past, arguing in court papers that if the therapists lost work Favre wasn’t responsible for it. A lawyer for the Jets also didn’t immediately respond to a call seeking comment Friday.

The therapists’ lawsuit was filed five days after the NFL fined Favre $50,000 for not being forthright in an investigation into allegations that he sent bawdy text messages and photos to former Jets game hostess Jenn Sterger when they both worked for the team. During that investigation, media reports claimed Favre also had pursued massage therapists, but the NFL said it was unable to get enough information to decide whether the reports were substantiated.

The Jets have said O’Toole and Scavo worked for the team for a combined total of five days over two years, making $2,300 in all, and were never guaranteed ongoing work. The team wasn’t told about the women’s concerns and simply turned to other massage therapists after its training facility moved in 2008, its officials and lawyers have said in court filings.

Favre retired from the NFL in 2010, after playing for 20 seasons, mostly with the Green Bay Packers. He began his career with the Atlanta Falcons and ended it with the Minnesota Vikings.

Red River tops West Fargo for ND state girls tennis team titleComments Off

West Fargo’s Mariah Stein returns a shot during a doubles match against Grand Forks Red River in the team competition of the North Dakota girl’s state tennis meet in Grand Forks Friday May 24, 2013/ JOHN STENNES/GRAND FORKS HERALD

GRAND FORKS – Choice Health and Fitness hosted a state championship for the first time ever Friday morning.

The results weren’t any different than the previous 11, though.

Grand Forks Red River is once again the North Dakota girls state tennis champion. The Roughriders defeated West Fargo 5-0 in the finals to earn their 12th straight team title.

“It’s something we work for all year long,” said Red River coach Greg LaDouceur, whose team has won 164 consecutive duals dating back to 2001. “I want to give the girls all the credit. They came back here and showed up this morning, and they fought real hard. West Fargo gave us a great match. Kudos to that team, but fortunately for us, we came out on top.

“Our players rose to the challenge, fought back, and it was a nice 5-0 victory for our team.”

Red River finished the season losing just one match in the team setting – a No. 2 doubles match in the state semifinals.

In the finals, the Roughriders won straight-set matches at No. 2 singles, No. 3 singles and No. 1 doubles to clinch the championship. Then, Mimi Yunker won a three-set match at No. 1 singles and the No. 2 doubles team of Paige Relling and Ellen Larsen outlasted West Fargo’s Mariah Stein and Jamie Freden in three sets to finish off the 5-0 win.

“It’s a great accomplishment,” LaDouceur said. “Any time you can win a championship, it’s great. When you can keep adding on and get that 12th one, it’s very special to the Red River tennis program.”

West Fargo earned its first trip to the state finals with back-to-back dramatic wins on Thursday afternoon. The Packers were tied 2-2 in both their quarterfinal and semifinal duals, but managed to pull out third-set victories in the decisive match to reach the finals.

But the Packers were overmatched by a Roughriders squad that’s strong at the top of the lineup.

“Even before the school year started, we were talking about this year, knowing it would be pretty tough,” Red River senior doubles player Lalangi Marasinghe said. “To finally finish it, it’s great.”

Marasinghe is the lone senior on the Roughriders.

“It’s kind of bittersweet,” she said. “I’m glad that we could win, but I’m sad that I’ll be leaving next year. But I’m leaving it in good hands.”
