Minnesota returns state-owned park land to native tribe

(Granite Falls, MN)  —  Minnesota is returning about two square miles of land to a tribe in the southwestern part of the state.

A ceremony was held Friday to make the transfer of the Upper Sioux Agency State Park to the Upper Sioux Community official.

Governor Tim Walz and Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan attended, with Walz saying the state wasn’t doing the right thing, but “simply undoing the wrong thing.”

Buildings still on the land will be transferred to the community, though some will be demolished because they need extensive repairs.
