MSUM cuts layoffs from six to one

(MOORHEAD, MINN) — At one time it appeared Minnesota State University Moorhead was headed toward six layoffs, but University officials say now that is down to one.

“As part of our annual budget planning process, we offered voluntary retirement incentives (officially called Board Early Retirement Incentives or BESIs) to qualifying faculty and staff last month,” Kristi Monson, Minnesota State University Moorhead’s Director of Communications, said Monday. “As a result of the BESI acceptances, we were able to reduce a possible six faculty layoffs (officially called retrenchments) to one retrenchment notice that was sent out at the end of last week.”

Monson said it could be anytime between one and three years before a faculty member separates from the unversity, due to a ‘long notice period.’
