Biden Apologizes For Government’s Role In Indian Boarding Schools

Laveen Village, AZ (24/7 News) — President Biden called the use of Indian boarding schools one of the most horrific chapters in American history.

Speaking in Arizona on Friday, Biden said children were taken from the homes, had their appearances and names changed. The President formally apologized to Native Americans for the boarding schools and said there’s no excuse for it ever happening in the first place. Biden said the pain caused by these schools will always cause shame.

Over a 150-year span, the U.S. government managed or paid religious groups and churches to operate the boarding school across nearly 40 states. According to the National American Indian Boarding School Healing Coalition, there were 15 Indian boarding schools in Minnesota and 12 in North Dakota. They aimed to assimilate Native American children by removing them from their homes and sending them sometimes thousands of miles away.
