Police warn about a jury duty scam

LAKE PARK, Minn. – Police are warning about a jury duty scam after a Lake Park woman loses $400.

A caller claimed to be a Cass County Deputy. He said she needed to pay $9,000 because she had a warrant for missing jury duty. The woman was kept on the phone for an hour-and-a-half while being threatened to be arrested. She sent the money through Cash In at the Dilworth Walmart when she wasn’t able to send it through Zelle or Cash App.

Lake Park Police Chief Brady Burnside says police will never call you if you have a warrant.

“They certainly are going to talk to you in-person. If you do miss jury duty, it’s not an automatic warrant. You get notified you missed jury duty and you get an opportunity to make that up and to explain to a judge what happened,” Burnside said.

Burnside adds police will never ask for money through an app. A similar scam was seen in Fargo-Moorhead in March.
