(BISMARCK, ND) – Voting is underway in North Dakota for the November general election.

North Dakota Secretary of State Michael Howe reported early Wednesday afternoon that a total of 107,800 ballots have been cast, including more than 38,000 people taking advantage of early in-person voting. That equates to more than 18 percent of the turnout.

North Dakota averages 63 percent turnout for a presidential election.

“We’re well on our way of eclipsing our average turnout,” Howe said in an interview Wednesday afternoon with WDAY Radio News.

He says the high number of individuals taking advantage of early in-person voting ‘signals that enthusiasm is high’ for this year’s election, which includes five statewide ballot questions, a Governor’s race, U.S. House race and the Presidential election.

“Early returns show that people are enthusiastic to have their voice heard,” Howe said.

Vote-by-mail ballots must be postmarked by Monday, or dropped off at the county auditor’s office by the end of business Monday, in order to be counted.

“We really encourage you to do your homework, do your homework, fill it out and get it in the day prior to Election Day,” Howe said.
