Citizen group to explore changing Fargo governance structure

(FARGO, ND) – A group of Fargo residents are looking to gauge resident interest on changing the City of Fargo’s governance structure.

The group appeared Monday night to request assistance from the City Attorney’s office in crafting the language.

“We have engaged an attorney, so we will be actually developing the language,” former City Commissioner Arlette Preston told the Commission. “But it would be an issue of just having the City Attorney take a look at it and advise us whether there are some major issues that would be seen from the city perspective.”

Fargo City Commissioner John Strand made a motion to direct the City Attorney to work with the group. His motion died to a lack of a second.

Mayor Tim Mahoney said a study coming soon will have more information about the city’s governance structure, and said the issue’s timing ‘would have been nice to have that.’

City Commissioner Denise Kolpack said she wants to see the results of the survey before moving forward.

“This was the local question added to the survey for public comment and feedback,” she said. “We’re going to have a brown bag session that will review all of that detail in no more than a month. I want to see that information first.”
