(JAMESTOWN, ND) – A fire at the University of Jamestown was reported overnight.
Erin Klein, Assistant to President Polly Peterson, confirmed to WDAY Radio News that the fire was reported early this morning. Dispatch audio showed that city fire crews were called at 1:37 a.m. to the campus cafeteria as “fire with visible flames and smoke” were being reported. Jamestown Ambulance was called to stage in the area at just after 2 a.m., with the Jamestown Rural Fire Department responding to a mutual aid request at 3:12 a.m.
Jamestown Fire Chief Jim Reuther says the building suffered ‘very significant damage’ and that the kitchen and student feeding areas are a total loss. He said construction was ongoing, and that it appeared that none of the new structure has been damaged by fire.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and Reuther says a few firefighters slipped and fell on ice, but no students or staff were in the building at the time of the fire.
