Spirit Lake Tribal Chairwoman says bill to authorize casino permit ‘introduce without formal government-to-government consultation

(FORT TOTTEN, ND) – The chairwoman of the Spirit Lake Tribe is opposing a North Dakota Senate bill that would authorize a casino permit in Grand Forks County.

The bill is Senate Bill 2376.

Spirit Lake Tribe Chairwoman Lonna Street says that the opposition to the bill is ‘a response to a legislative process that did not adequately include all affected tribal nations.’

Street says that the bill was ‘introduced without formal government-to-government consultation with the Spirit Lake Tribe and possible other tribal nations.’

The bill was heard in the Senate Judiciary Committee, with no action being taken.
