True North Steel President Dan Kadrmas interviewed by Scott Hennen
FARGO, N.D. – The President of Fargo-based True North Steel says there are concerns about President Donald Trump’s 25 percent tariffs on aluminum and steel imports, but believes the country will be better off because of them.
“What happens to companies that are downstream similar to what we are as we’re a fabricator. The concern is that steel can come in from foreign countries like China and go to countries like Mexico or Canada and be fabricated and shipped into the U.S. at a much cheaper price,” Dan Kadrmas said.
Kadrmas says the tariffs help accomplish leveling the playing field in steel manufacturing. He says in 2024 the U.S. made 4.2 percent of the world’s steel. China manufactured 53.4 percent and the next closest country was India at eight percent.
Kadrmas adds China increases steel production every year and aims to put the U.S. out of the steel business.
