Bill requiring Ten Commandments in schools fails in N.D. House

(BISMARCK, ND) – A bill that would require schools to post the Ten Commandments in buildings has failed.

House Bill 1145, despite receiving a do pass recommendation in committee, failed on the House floor 53-38. Several House members spoke ahead of the full House vote.

Rep. Jayme Davis, of Rolette, calls the bill ‘unconstitutional.’ She says the Constitution ‘explicitly prohibits the government from establishing religion.’

Rep. Mike Nathe, of Bismarck, said potential litigation over the bill, if passed, could surpass one million dollars of taxpayer money.
