OSHA levies fine against Soo Line Railroad after derailment in Foster County

(WASHINGTON, DC) – The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has levied a penalty against a Minneapolis railroad following a derailment in 2024.

The derailment happened on July 5 at around 3:36 a.m. 29 railcars, from the Soo Line Railroad, on the main track of the Carrington Subdivision near Bordulac derailed.

Of the 29 railcars, 17 tank cars were transporting hazardous materials. There was a postaccident release of methanol and anhydrous ammonia from multiple tank cars and a subsequent pool fire surrounding the derailed cars. There were no initial reports of injuries.

The original amount of the fine was more than $6,900, but an informal settlement reduced the penalty to just over $4,100.
