MINNESOTA – Medical experts are sounding the alarm, after a Minneapolis child came down with the flu and developed a rare brain inflammation.
The condition influenza-associated acute necrotizing encephalitis, also known as ANE, causes the tissue to deteriorate quickly. The Minnesota Department of Health says even though this is a rare disease, the mortality rates are high and it’s not too late to get a flu shot.
Pediatricians throughout the country have seen a spike in cases of ANE associated with influenza A. Those affected have typically been healthy children many of whom have not had a flu shot.
