Pelican Rapids man sentenced in domestic assault case

(CLAY COUNTY, MINN) – A Pelican Rapids man will spend three months in jail after being sentenced in a domestic assault case in Clay County District Court.

Cole Franzen was convicted in Clay County District Court on three counts – fourth degree assault on a peace officer, disarming a peace officer and felony domestic assault. The sentence was handed down by Judge Johnathan Judd.

Court documents state that, on December 14, 2024, an officer responded to a possible domestic situation in the 20 block of 2nd Avenue NW in Pelican Rapids. When arriving, the officer learned that Franzen choked the victim ‘to the point where she could not breathe.’ The officer announced to Franzen that he was under arrest, at which time the suspect ran away toward the home. The deputy caught up with Franzen and they struggled, but the deputy was able to pull Franzen to the ground.

The deputy then deployed his taser, to no avail. Franzen continued to fight back. The deputy then put his taser down next to Franzen, who, in turn, was able to grab the taser and deploy it on the deputy. Officers were eventually able to subdue Franzen and place him under arrest.

In addition to jail time, Franzen will serve five years of supervised probation.
