BISMARCK, N.D. – A measure to lessen penalties for possession of minor amounts of marijuana is moving ahead in the North Dakota legislature.
The House passed a bill 76 to 17 that would treat possession of under one-half of an ounce of marijuana more like a speeding ticket with no criminal charge. Instead, the offender would be hit with a $150 fine. State numbers show the half ounce threshold would be roughly 94 percent of cannabis-related possession cases in North Dakota.
The bill now heads to the Senate.
