State Rep. Backer’s drafted bill would allow MN counties to secede to another state

SAINT PAUL, Minn. – GOP State Representative Jeff Backer of Browns Valley is working on a bill that would allow county commissioners in Minnesota to vote on seceding to a different state.

Backer, whose district includes Wilkin, Otter Tail, Grant and Traverse counties, says the state counties could secede to don’t have to be one bordering Minnesota. There are efforts in Indiana to allow 33 counties from Illinois to join the state.

“This is something that we’re serious about because, unfortunately, we have seen what one party control has done in Minnesota. They listen to liberal elites in the metro area. They’re not listening to the hard workers in Greater Minnesota. There’s a reason why it’s called greater. We are greater, because if it wasn’t for Greater Minnesota, the economic engine, which under one party control, is not running on eight cylinders. Your metro areas wouldn’t’ be as strong. That’s what’s created Minneapolis-St. Paul,” Backer said.

Backer says he introduced a similar bill last session, but it wasn’t given a committee hearing.
