(BISMARCK, ND) – A measure that would restrict term limits in legislative and statewide elected offices has failed in the North Dakota House.
The bill, HCR 3034, was defeated 72-20.
“There were some very good ideas in this bill for changing and expanding term limits,” Rep. Austen Schauer (R-West Fargo) said.
He said committee members felt that the 60 percent threshold on initiated measure needs to come before any changes to term limit law take place. He thinks the term limit question may be best for the 2028 ballot.
The bill would have placed a limit of ‘12 cumulative years in either the house of representatives or the senate until after four years have elapsed since reaching 12 cumulative years of service in that chamber. The measure also places 12 cumulative year term limits on statewide elected executive branch officers, except the governor and the lieutenant governor. The measure places eight cumulative year term limits on the governor and lieutenant governor,’ according to bill language.
