North Dakota Court System releases 2024 report

(STATEWIDE) – The North Dakota Court System has released its annual report.

At the state level, the North Dakota Supreme Court had 335 filed in calendar year 2024, a decrease of 11 percent from 2023 and the lowest since 2020, when 329 cases were filed at the state’s highest court.

At the district court level in 2024, 168,304 cases were filed, a nine percent decrease from 2023. Criminal filings at the district level decreased by less than one-half of a percent from 2023 to 2024. Felonies decreased by 1.1 percent, while misdemeanors increased by 1.2 percent.

Administrative traffic case filings increased by more than 12 percent to 103,839 in 2024 – but the court says these cases ‘require little judicial involvement.’

Juvenile referrals totaled 5,577 in 2024, down more than 400 from 2023, when there were 5,998 referrals. A majority of the referrals in 2024 were for offenses against persons. In 2023, a majority of the referrals were for drug or alcohol offenses.
