Walz releases revised budget with nearly $250 million in cuts

SAINT PAUL, Minn. – Governor Tim Walz unveiled a revised budget that now reduces his original plan by just under $250 million for the 2028 to 2029 fiscal year.

There are also investments supporting the state’s response to bird flu and funding for law enforcement training from the Philando Castile Memorial Training Fund.

Walz says his budget leaves more than $2 billion on the bottom line in fiscal year 2026 to 2027.

“This budget is fiscally responsible and prioritizes the programs that will set Minnesotans up for success for generations to come,” said Walz in the announcement.

“By addressing the budget challenges we face today, we’re setting Minnesota up for long-term success and protecting the resources necessary to make Minnesota the best state to live, work, and raise a family,” writes Walz.

Minnesota Management and Budget Commissioner Erin Campbell says the revised budget “curtails spending growth while maintaining key services that improve Minnesotans’ lives.”

“This budget is fiscally responsible and recognizes the need to take action now to address the imbalance in revenues and spending long-term,” writes Campbell.
