Altru Emergency Department doctor reflects on changes in medicine, hospital operation

(GRAND FORKS, ND) – As chair of the Emergency Department at Altru Hospital, Dr. Christopher Boe has seen his fair share of changes over the years – and not just in medicine, but in how hospitals operate.

“Well I think there’s been an emphasis on trying to get your treatments done and get out of the hospital,” he said.

Boe said it was not uncommon for patients to stay for a week years ago, packing a suitcase.

“Now people want to get healthy, they want to get well, they want to get their treatments, and they want to go home,” he said. Doctors are constantly striving to deliver a high quality of care.

He says it’s all in the timing.

“The quicker we can institute treatments, the quicker that we can make correct diagnosis, the more quickly people can get out of the hospital, too,” Boe said.
