SAINT PAUL, Minn. – Moorhead-based American Crystal Sugar Company has been fined $16,000 by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency.
The agency says the Moorhead plant failed to collect fecal samples twice and failed to stop discharging wastewater when fecal sample results showed they exceeded their limit during five days in 2024. The MPCA says the East Grand Forks plant exceeded their fecal sample limit during two days in 2024. The results were found during a MPCA investigation.
“MPCA rules and regulations are designed to protect human health and the environment by limiting pollution emissions and discharges from facilities. When companies do not fully comply with regulatory requirements, the resulting pollution can be harmful to people and the environment,” The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency said in a statement.
