(BISMARCK) – A Bismarck middle school educator has been named North Dakota’s Teacher of the Year in a ceremony at the State Capitol in Bismarck. Kendall Bergrud, who teaches math at Bismarck’s Wachter Middle School, was named the 2025 Teacher of the Year. Bergrud is the second straight Wachter Middle School educator to win the award, with Sheila Peterson, a Wachter physical education and athletics teacher, winning it in 2024.

Bergrud was one of four finalists. The others were Macie Harris-Nelson, a music teacher in Kenmare; Ashley Nudell, family and consumer sciences teacher in Lisbon; and Kayla Tatro, an English, math, science, music and technology teacher in Carson.

Bergrud will be considered for National Teacher of the Year, announced in the spring of 2025.
