(FARGO) – The City of Fargo is upgrading its water meter technology by transitioning to an Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) system. This upgrade includes the replacement of all water meters in Fargo homes and businesses. The replacement project will begin in September 2024 and continue through 2026. The work will occur in phases based on property locations, and customers will receive instructions on how to sign up for an appointment when installation is beginning in their area.
The AMI system will improve customer service, optimize operations, reduce water loss and enhance the management of water resources. The new digital water meters will use wireless radio frequencies – similar to a cellphone or wireless internet – to send and receive information. The water meters will regularly transmit water-usage data to The City of Fargo Water Utility, allowing for on-demand readings. Currently, water meters are read once a month.
With the AMI system, Water Utility customers will be able to access their water-usage data through an online dashboard or application accessible on computers, smartphones and tablets. The AMI system will provide customers with a better understanding of their water bills and will improve the detection of leaks, potentially reducing water/sewer costs. Customers will be able to receive automated alerts when continuous water flow is identified to prevent property damage.
The City of Fargo has partnered with Core & Main and VEPO to install the new water meters. Participation in the water meter upgrade project is mandatory for all customers who receive water services from The City of Fargo. There is no cost to the customer for this upgrade.
