County Commission approves Cass County inmates to be housed at Clay County Jail

MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Clay County Commission votes unanimously to approve housing Cass County inmates at the Clay County Jail.

The move has also been approved by the North Dakota Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

Clay County Sheriff Mark Empting says his staff will start with moving 10 inmates over to the Moorhead facility if the Cass County Commission also approves it. He adds the Clay County Jail has 103 inmates housed there and can hold 150 without having to hire additional staff.

Cass County Sheriff Jesse Jahner says 15 to 25 inmates weekly are housed at different facilities in North Dakota and 20 are on community supervision which are on ankle monitoring.

“A number of our inmates are pretrial and still have court and housing people for example in McKenzie County which is across the state of North Dakota causes us to use a number of resources to transport those individuals back and forth to court,” Jahner explained.

If the Cass County Commission approves the plan, the county will pay Clay County $75 dollars a day a per inmate including the cost of medical, dental and prescriptions.
