Discovery of dead baby in Sioux Falls recycling center prompts awareness of available services

SIOUX FALLS, SD — Local resources are raising awareness after a baby’s body was found at a Sioux Falls recycling center Tuesday.

There are many options available in South Dakota for those who feel they may not be able to parent their newborn. One is the Helpline Center, where anyone with mental health emergencies, big or small, can call 9-8-8 when there’s nobody else to turn to. Director of the Service, Evonne Hawe, says she believes one of her responders could have prevented the tragedy.

Resources like the Department of Social Services, Planned Parenthood, and the Alpha Center are also available in Sioux Falls.

South Dakota does have the “safe haven” law that allows people to legally leave their baby at certain places, or with authorized people, without revealing their identity.
