Equipment breakdown delays downtown asphalt project

(FARGO) – The City of Fargo’s Engineering Department announces that a contractor will be completing an asphalt overlay on 4th Street North, from 1st Avenue North to the railroad tracks near 5th Avenue North. The work will begin on Wednesday, September 4, and is expected to be finished by the end of the day on Thursday, September 5. The project will be completed in two phases:

Phase 1: On Wednesday, September 4, work will occur on 4th Street North between 1st Avenue North and 4th Avenue North. This stretch of 4th Street North will be closed in both directions for the entire day. This closure will not affect the intersection of 1st Avenue North and 4th Street North. Traffic will be detoured to 2nd Street North. During this phase, the contractor will also pave 5th Street North from 4th Avenue North to 3rd Avenue North, and 3rd Avenue North from Broadway to 4th Street North. The parking lot west of the Main Library will be closed, but the east lot will remain open, and the library will maintain regular hours throughout the project.

Phase 2: On Thursday, September 5, work will shift to 4th Street North between 4th Avenue North and 5th Avenue North. This section will be closed in both directions for one day. The intersection of 4th Avenue North will be closed during this phase. Traffic will be detoured to 4th Avenue North, then to 2nd Street North, to 6th Avenue North and back to 4th Street North.

Crews will begin by milling the existing asphalt on Friday, August 30. This will be completed under traffic, and the street will not be closed. Traffic control and flaggers will be present to manage the flow of traffic.

City Hall (225 4th St. N.) will maintain its regular hours (7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.) during the closure. The parking lots to the south and west of City Hall will remain open; however, the west lot will only be accessible via 4th Avenue North on Wednesday, September 4.
