Fargo native details experience in California wildfires

(CALABASAS, CA) – For North Dakota native Chris Berg, a harrowing experience after fires were close to his Calabasas, Cali., home.

Calabasas is in the southwest region of the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles County, northwest of downtown Los Angeles.

“(I’m) doing much better as we get on the other side of this situation,” Berg told The Flag’s What’s On Your Mind program.

He said the experiences he’s had are ‘like living outside just on the edge of literal hell.’ He says he lost power in his home early Tuesday morning last week. Power was restored after several days.

The fire is still raging.

“You go outside and it’s just eery,” Berg said. “You look up on a ridge there just outside my place, and you can see the flame. The smoke looks like an atomic bomb went off.”

The fire impacting Berg’s home is the Palisades Fire, which, as of Monday night, burned 23,713 acres, damaged more than 200 structures, destroyed more than 1,200 structures and threatened more than 12,000 structures. Three civilians have been hurt and eight have died because of the fire, which is 14 percent contained.
