(BELCOURT, ND) – A spokesperson with the Minneapolis office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation has confirmed that the federal agency has taken over the investigation of an officer-involved shooting near Belcourt on Sunday.
“We are aware of the incident and the investigation is ongoing,” FBI Minneapolis Public Affairs Specialist Diana Freedman told WDAY Radio News in an email Tuesday. “There is no additional information available at this time.”
A man died in the shooting. Authorities with the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa say it happened on the reservation when officers called to Highway 5 just west of Belcourt finding the victim performing multiple U-turns in an apparent attempt to begin a chase. A confrontation ensured, and at least one of the officers opened fired, killing the man.
