(GRAND FORKS, ND) — Grand Forks officially has a new police chief.

The Grand Forks City Council officially approved the contract for Jason Freedman at its regular city council meeting Monday night in Grand Forks City Council chambers. The contract includes an approximately $161,000 salary plus membership into the public safety pension plan, moving allowance and a six-month severance for termination without cause.

Friedman told the council that he’s already begun communicating with people within the department.

He will begin his position on January 27.

Friedman will take over for Mark Nelson, who retired as the city’s top cop in September.
