MANDAN, N.D. – Construction crews break ground for a correctional facility in Mandan.

The $166 million project will be the first prison designed specifically for women built from the ground up in North Dakota.

The Heart River Correctional Center will support rehabilitation, reentry and family reconnection. It will also have a nursery program to allow incarcerated mothers to stay with their newborns for up to 18 months.

“This will ensure that residents have safe and modern facilities to help them with rehabilitation and safe reentry into our communities,” Governor Kelly Armstrong said.

Construction is projected to finish by fall 2027.
