(FARGO, ND) – With winter weather turning cold, guests at the Downtown Engagement Center are in need of things to get them through the winter season.
Staff briefed the Fargo Human Rights Commission on some of the needs of those using the Center. The items include winter snow boots, hats, gloves, bibs, jackets and overalls. Additionally, the tenants sometimes are in need of socks, boot warmers, hand warmers and thermal undergarments.
In addition to clothing, things like bus passes, flashlights, pet supplies and snacks are welcome.
“We are seeing a lot more pets,” Homeless Outreach Coordinator Carissa Raaen said.
She said the items don’t have to be brand new – used items can be collected, as well.
Items can be dropped at the Downtown Engagement Center, which is open from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., or at the Gladys Ray Shelter, which is open from 5 p.m. until 8 a.m. The Engagement Center is located at 222 4th Street North, and the Shelter is located at 1519 1st Avenue South.
Between 80 and 100 individuals are using the Downtown Engagement Center on average, City officials say. The Warming Center has averaged approximately 37 people per night in December.
