House passes, defeats separate bills on free school breakfast, lunch

(BISMARCK, ND) – The North Dakota House is working through legislation heading into crossover at the end of the month. Two of those bills have to do with school breakfast and lunch programs.

House Bill 1553, which was defeated by the House 75-14 on Tuesday, would have taken $140 million from the Legacy Fund to cover school meals – both breakfast and lunch at no cost to students.

House Bill 1475, which is currently in House Appropriations and passed out of the House Education Committee 8-5 with one absent/not voting, would appropriate $140 million from the General Fund to cover the meals for the 2025-27 biennium.
