SEATTLE – A federal judge temporarily blocks President Donald Trump’s executive order aiming to limit birthright citizenship for 14 days.
Seattle Federal Judge John C. Coughenour heard arguments in a lawsuit filed by Arizona, Illinois, Oregon and Washington. The Reagan appointee says the executive order is “blatantly unconstitutional”.
“All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside,” the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution says.
Trump signed the executive order Monday after being sworn back into office. The order would limit birthright citizenship to children born to at least one parent who is either a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
Five different lawsuits have been filed over the executive order, including one by Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison.
