Legislature hears Kupec bill impacting Guard members

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Senator Rob Kupec (DFL-Moorhead) had his first bill of the legislative session heard in the Senate Taxes Committee Wednesday. His bill, SF 668, allows Minnesotans who serve in border state National Guard units to be eligible for the Minnesota income tax subtraction for active service.

“As a neighbor to a large National Guard presence in Fargo, many of my constituents serve in the North Dakota National Guard while calling Minnesota home. This is a simple change that honors their service and gives them the credit they are due,” said Sen. Kupec. “This will help ensure all military service members are treated more fairly in our state.”

While Minnesota National Guard, reserve or Air Guard members are able to subtract all of their pay for active service, Minnesotans serving in bordering units are not. Sen. Kupec’s proposal would extend this same benefit to Minnesotans serving in Wisconsin, Iowa, South Dakota, and North Dakota units.

S.F. 668 was laid over for possible inclusion in a future omnibus tax bill.
