Cass County Sheriff details strain placed on multiple services due to illegal drugs in the region

(WDAY Radio) – Cass County Sheriff Jesse Jahner spoke about some of the impacts of the illegal drug trade hitting the Red River Valley, saying it has a resounding effect on more than the criminal justice system.

Jahner made the comments on The Flag’s What’s on Your Mind Tuesday morning. He recently wrote a letter sent to North Dakota and South Dakota lawmakers from the Dakota Territory Sheriffs’ Association highlighting the amount of illegal drugs entering the region, stating troubles at both the northern and southern borders are in-play for the crisis.

“It puts strains on all of our resources. It puts strain on our jails, because our jail is full. It puts increases on our addiction services in our community, and it puts strains on our mental health services, which we don’t have enough of right now.”

Jahner made the comments the day before the U.S. House Judiciary Committee is set to meet in North Dakota about Northern border crossings and the illicit drug trade. The sheriff is one of many local law enforcement representatives who are expected to speak with members of the U.S. House.
