FARGO, ND — A Fargo School Board Candidate is reiterating his support for school safety both inside and outside the classroom as a key campaign message going into the primary election.
Jason Nelson made the statements while on The Flag’s What’s on Your Mind Wednesday morning. He spoke on school safety in regards to less-than well-behaved students within the classroom, saying he is hearing from many teachers and parents about concerns from some disruptive kids.
“What they are experiencing is disruption,” said Nelson to listeners. “Maybe kids that shouldn’t be put in a traditional classroom setting are placed in those settings, and they stay in those settings. Those kids probably need a different type of service provided by Fargo Public Schools, whether that is the explorer’s academy or more one-on-one work. Currently, some of these kids disrupt a classroom for part of the day, or an entire day, so that leaves 20 other kids that aren’t getting the education they need or is expected.”
Nelson also explored the idea of safety from outside the classroom. He expressed support of improvements to school security, whether it be a single access point, increased access to School Resource Officers, and more. However, he also expressed his willingness to place more funds into school security from other current expenditures.
“There is a lot of technology out there that can help also, whether it is weapons detections systems, camera systems, different controlled access, things like that […] Some money would be better spent in that arena as they explore things going forward.”
