Feds bust Minneapolis man for allegedly trying to join ISIS

MINNEAPOLIS – A man accused of providing material support to a terror organization was arrested by by the FBI in Minnesota.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for Minnesota says Abdisatar Ahmed Hassan of Minneapolis tried twice unsuccessfully to travel to Somalia to link up with ISIS.

Prosecutors also say Hassan publicly supported the terror group and was even making social media posts through a site that is notorious for encouraging people to travel overseas to join ISIS.

“Manjaniq Media Center” has a Facebook page and promotes itself as the media wing of the Islamic Caliphate.

Hassan is also accused of publicly praising the man who carried out the Jan. 1 terror attack in New Orleans, and shared footage of himself in February driving around with an ISIS flag in his vehicle.

In another, Hassan is seen driving with ha knife in his lap.

Days after the postings, the FBI spotted Hassan again driving around while holding the flag.

“Those who support foreign terrorist organizations in our homeland—like Hassan—are a clear and present threat to our national security,” said Acting U.S. Attorney Lisa D. Kirkpatrick in a statement.  “They will be held to account.”

Hassan was arrested on Feb. 27 and is charged with attempting to provide material support and resources to a designated foreign terrorist organization.

Hassan will have a formal detention hearing on March 5.
