Minnesota Republican Party Chair: Residents of House District 40B deserve a special election as soon as possible

(ST. PAUL, MINN) – The Republican Party of Minnesota Chairman says a lawsuit filed to stop Governor Tim Walz from holding a special election for District 40B is the latest in a cases where the party and its members have went to the courts ‘to ensure that Democrats follow the law as written.’

“We filed this lawsuit because we heard from our members and voters of the district, who were frustrated with Governor Walz calling for a special election, in violation of the law, over the holiday week with insufficient notice,” Republican Party of Minnesota Chairman Alex Plechash said in a press conference Monday. “The residents of House District 40B deserve a special election as soon as possible, and, by Governor Walz acting unlawfully, he puts that in jeopardy.”

On December 27, Walz issued a writ of special election to fill a vacancy in House District 40B in Ramsey County following the resignation of Representative-elect Curtis Johnson. The Representative-elect resigned after a court found he did not meet requirements of residency for the office.

“Governor Walz did not follow the election law when he issued a writ on December 27,” Ryan Wilson, attorney for the Republican Party of Minnesota, said.
