Mississippi River “sheen” prompts concern from environmental experts

ST. PAUL, MN — Multiple state agencies are investigating the cause of a “sheen” on the Mississippi River that was spotted on Tuesday between Coon Rapids and Fridley.

Preliminary tests did not show any pollutants and officials said they can find no signs of an ongoing leak or spill. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and the Minnesota Department collected samples for further testing and expect to see those results later today.

A second smaller sheen was spotted early yesterday near Coon Rapids Dam Regional Park. Investigators are trying to determine if the two sightings are connected.
