MN State Senator charged with coercion of a minor resigns

SAINT PAUL, Minn. – Senate Minority Leader Mark Johnson of East Grand Forks says he’s gotten a letter of resignation from Republican State Senator Justin Eichorn of Grand Rapids.

He faces federal charges of attempted coercion of a minor. Prosecutors say he messaged an undercover officer posing as a 17-year-old girl agreeing to pay her for sex. He was arrested when he arrived to meet her in Bloomington.

“This is the right thing to do for his family and the Senate. We are ready to move on and do the important work that needs to be done at the capitol,” Johnson said.

The Senate was scheduled to vote on expelling Eichorn on Thursday.

The DFL now holds a two-seat majority over Republicans in the Senate.
