Moorhead DFL State Rep. to keep paycheck despite walk out

SAINT PAUL, Minn. – DFL State Representative Heather Keeler of Moorhead says she will keep her paycheck despite boycotting the legislative session on the House floor.

“As a state representative I am still doing my job by meeting with constituents, meeting with local officials, participating in tours, talking with staff, drafting bills, and more,” Keeler said when asked by Flag Family media if she would donate her paycheck to charity until she shows up for floor sessions at the capitol.

Sixty-six House Democrats didn’t show up for the first day of the legislative session Tuesday because they say Republicans didn’t agree to a power sharing agreement. One seat in the House is vacant since a judge ruled DFLer Curtis Johnson, who won his Roseville area seat, didn’t meet residency requirements. Governor Tim Walz announced a special election January 28.

State law says 68 Representatives need to be present in the House to begin business and there were 67 Republicans in the chamber. Despite this, Republicans elected State Rep. Lisa Demuth of Cold Spring as Speaker. Democrats call the move “a sham”.
