(Washington, DC) – A source close to the situation says Minnesota GOP Congressman Tom Emmer may be seeking the nomination to be the next speaker of the House. POLITICO reported the developments Friday afternoon.
Earlier Friday, Emmer posted on X, formerly Twitter, “We should not leave town until we deliver on our constitutional duty and elect a Speaker. Americans are counting on us. Let’s get it done.”
There was no indication from the Emmer camp confirming the news as of late Friday night.
Congressman Brad Finstad, representing Minnesota’s First Congressional District, released a statement in support of Emmer’s bid for Speaker.
“In January, our Conference elected Congressman Emmer to be our Majority Whip – a position in which Tom has shown profound leadership. Whether it’s across Minnesota or across the country, Congressman Emmer has the trust and respect necessary to lead the People’s House. I am happy to support him for Speaker,” he said.
POLITICO reports say that Republicans have until noon Sunday to submit their names for speaker, saying they will return Monday for a candidate forum, setting up a conference vote potentially on Tuesday.
